MICHELE IACOVONE THE BASKET WEAVER Liceo Classico “Publio Virgilio Marone”, Vico del Gargano, and its Carpino division is one of the seven partners (Spain, Austria, Germany, Poland, Italy: Padua) taking part in the C.A.R.I.D.I.S. Grundtvig project. C.A.R.I.D.I.S. is the acronym of CAtalogue of trades, professions or traditional jobs in RIsk of DISappearance in Europe. The aim of the project is to promote ancient crafts typical of various European countries. This interview is the result of a visit to Mr Michele Iacovone’s workshop, to learn more about the ancient basket weaving craft, firmly rooted in the Gargano territory. The baskets, of different shapes and suitable for any household purposes, are fascinating in their apparent simplicity, although on a closer scrutiny, they reveal their inherent complexity of design. They fit in perfectly with the latest technological trends. In short, the lesson drawn from this meeting is how to best reconcile past traditions with the environmental care or even fashion. All this, with a cheerful and encouraging smile from Mr. Iacovone.

Proudly displaying her handicraft to the visitors’ admiring eyes, Ms Maria Voto, the cloth weaver, is absolutely right, saying that her products tell about the culture and history of the Gargano people. The remarkable fabrics, painstakingly produced according to the ancient techniques, with the use of original, centuries old designs, let their customers immerse themselves in a world that has almost disappeared. Full of colours or austere in style, a richly decorated pillow or a traditional towel – whatever your taste or preference, you’d be hard-pressed to get out Ms Voto’s workshop without at least a small keepsake.
